[edit]Uncertain. One possibility considered is a loan from Old East Slavic *сукалиѧ (*sukaliję) (compare Russian скалья́ (skalʹjá)). Related to Ingrian sukkulain, Karelian sukkula, sukkulaine, Ludian sukkulainʹe and Veps sukloine.
