From Proto-Germanic *terwą, from Proto-Indo-European *derwo-. Compare Proto-Germanic *trewą ( > English tree), from Proto-Indo-European *dóru (tree). Cognate with Middle Low German ter (Dutch teer, German Teer), Old Norse tjara.
