Etymology

Sino-Vietnamese word from ; this is the Northern form. Doublet of thạnh, the Southern form.

The Southern form has been mostly displaced by the Northern form as a morpheme, but persists in placenames, such as of the communes Nhơn Thạnh and Thạnh Phước in Bến Tre.
