From Medieval Latin or Late Latin theodiscus, from Proto-Germanic *þiudiskaz (“of the people, popular, vernacular”), from *þeudō (“people”) + *-iskaz (“-ish, -ic, -al”). Compare Italian tedesco, Venetian todesco, French thiois.
