[edit]From Proto-Hmong *tsjoᴮ (“tiger”), borrowed from Middle Chinese 祖 (MC tsuX, “ancestor”). The semantic shift from "ancestor" > "tiger" comes from the traditional Southeast Asian association and addressing of tigers as ancestors.[1]
