The sense “storey” derives from a late-medieval practice of gaining an additional storey by lowering the floor of a house’s attic and/or putting the ground floor below ground level.

Usage notes

• In the Dutch-speaking countries, eerste verdieping is the first floor above ground level (as in British usage). The ground floor is called begane grond. Until the seventeenth century, eerste verdieping could have both senses.
