Etymology[edit]
From Proto-Algonquian *weϴkani (“bone”). Cognate with Malecite-Passamaquoddy skonis, Ojibwe -kan-, Mohegan-Pequot -skan, Miami -hkan-, Abenaki wskan, Menominee ohkān, Plains Cree ᐅᐢᑲᐣ (“oskan”).
