From Proto-Algonquian *weϴkani (bone). Cognate with Malecite-Passamaquoddy skonis, Ojibwe -kan-, Mohegan-Pequot -skan, Miami -hkan-, Abenaki wskan, Menominee ohkān, Plains Cree ᐅᐢᑲᐣ (oskan).
