[edit]Learned borrowing from Ancient Greek ἄπνοος (ápnoos). By surface analysis, ά- (á-, alpha privative) + -πνοος (-pnoos, “of breath”). See πνέω (pnéō) and for stem πνο-, πνοή (pnoḗ).
