From Proto-Indo-European *snḗh₁wr̥. Cognate with Latin nervus, English sinew, Sanskrit स्नावन् (snā́van, “tendon, muscle, sinew”), Old Armenian նեարդ (neard), and Avestan 𐬯𐬥𐬁𐬎𐬎𐬀𐬭𐬆 (snāuuar^ə).
