From магни́т (magnít, magnet) +‎ -о- (-o-, connecting vowel) +‎ гора́ (gorá, mountain) +‎ -ск (-sk); named after a mountain called магни́тная (magnítnaja, magnetic) because it consisted almost completely of iron.
