From Proto-Turkic *kergä-k (deverbal). Cognate with Shor керек (kerek), Tuvan херек (xerek), Yakut кэрэх (kereq); Southern Altai керек (kerek), Kyrgyz керек (kerek), Kazakh керек (kerek), Bashkir кәрәк (kərək), Tatar кирәк (kiräk), Turkish gerek, etc.
