Etymology

Inherited from Old East Slavic колпакъ (kolpakŭ), derived from a Turkic source. Compare Ukrainian ковпа́к (kovpák) or ковпи́к (kovpýk). Compare Bashkir ҡалпаҡ (qalpaq), Tatar калфак (qalfaq), Kazakh қалпақ (qalpaq), Uzbek qalpoq, Turkish kalpak (cap) etc. Ultimately from Middle Persian kwlʾp̄k' (kulāfak, little cap; calyx), diminutive of kwlʾp̄ (kulāf, cap, bonnet)
