Inherited from Proto-Slavic *kǫtъ. Further origin is either from the root of Proto-Slavic *kǫpъ (thicket, bush; kink) or less likely related to къ́там (kǎ́tam, to conceal), къ́тна (kǎ́tna, to nudge) (both of unclear origin).
