From Proto-Turkic *bẹldir (cross-roads, separation of two roads or rivers). Cognates with Shor пелтир, Southern Altai белтир (beltir), Tuvan белдир (beldir), etc. Compare also Kalmyk белчр (belçr), Mongolian бэлчир (belčir), Buryat бэлшэр (belšer), etc.
