From Proto-Finno-Ugric *sükśe. Cognate with Moksha сёксе (śokśe), Finnish syksy, Livonian si'gž, Northern Sami čakča, Western Mari шӹжӹ (šÿžÿ), Udmurt сӥзьыл (siźyl), Hungarian ősz.
