Etymology

From *խարբալ (*xarbal, sieve) (attested as Middle Armenian խարբալ (xarbal)), from Classical Syriac ܥܱܪܒܳܠܴܐ (ʿarbālā, sieve).[1][2][3] See Arabic غِرْبَال (ḡirbāl) for more. Compare also Middle Armenian խալբալել (xalbalel).

    • 5th century, Bible, Luke 22.31:
      Եւ ասէ Տէր․ Սիմովն, Սիմովն, ահա Սատանայ խնդրեաց զձեզ խարբալել իբրեւ զցորեան։
      Ew asē Tēr; Simovn, Simovn, aha Satanay xndreacʻ zjez xarbalel ibrew zcʻorean.
      And the Lord said, Simon, Simon, behold, Satan hath desired [to have] you, that he may sift [you] as wheat.
  2. (transitive, figuratively) to tempt, try
