From Proto-Indo-European *ḱh₂sti-, from *ḱeh₂s- (to lead, teach, educate). Cognate with Sanskrit शस्ति (śasti, punishment, command) and Avestan 𐬯𐬁𐬯𐬙𐬎 (sāstu, to teach).
