Modification, under the influence of פֿלאַטערן (flatern, “to flutter”) and the diminutive suffix ־ל (-l), of Old High German fifaltra, from Proto-West Germanic *fifaldrā, *fifaldā, from Proto-Germanic *fifaldǭ. Compare German flattern (“to flutter”) and Falter (“moth”).
