Inherited from Middle Persian [script needed] (jamšēd), a Persian formation of Avestan 𐬫𐬌𐬨𐬀-𐬑𐬱𐬀𐬉𐬙𐬀 (yima-xšaēta), from Proto-Iranian *yámHah (Yama; twin, pair) +‎ *xšáytah (bright, shining), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *yémHos.
