Inherited from Proto-Turkic *tīĺ (tooth); cognate with Azerbaijani diş, Bashkir теш (teş), Kazakh тіс (tıs), Kyrgyz тиш (tiş), Turkmen diş, Uyghur چىش (chish), Uzbek tish and Yakut тиис (tiis).

From Arabic جَيْش (jayš). "j" often becomes "d" under the influence of a sibilant.[1] Compare شدر (šadar) from Arabic شَجَر (šajar) and دحش (daħš) from Arabic جَحْش (jaḥš). Cognate with Chadian Arabic دیش (dēš).
