[edit]According to Watkins, related to Arabic مات (māt, “to die”).[1] However, compare Sanskrit मात (māta, “traversed, measured across”), past participle of मा (mā) (verbal root), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *mimáHti, *mimHati, from Proto-Indo-European *meh₁-; see मिमीते (mimīte, “to mark off”).[2]
