Etymology[edit]

From the older form ܒܲܪ ܚܡܵܗܹ̈ܐ (bar ḥmāhē, literally son of parents-in-law), the second element being the plural of the archaic ܚܡܵܐ (ḥmā, father-in-law), now ܚܸܡܝܵܢܵܐ (ḥimyānā).
