Etymology

From Old Georgian წილი (c̣ili), from Proto-Kartvelian *c̣₁il-.

The sense of "nit" could have developed under the influence of ჭილი (č̣ili), ჭიჭილა (č̣ič̣ila) (from Proto-Georgian-Zan *č̣il-) or ტილი (ṭili) (from Proto-Kartvelian *ṭilʿ-).
