From Proto-Indo-European *h₂éǵreh₂ (hunt), cognate with Old Irish ár (slaughter) (< Proto-Celtic *agrom) and Avestan 𐬀𐬰𐬭𐬋𐬛𐬀𐬌𐬜𐬍 (azrōdaiδī, hunt). See ἄγω (ágō, to lead) for the root.
