Etymology[edit]
The scepter of the Roman queen of the gods, Juno, surmounted by a star. The scepter took various forms in the 19th century, some rather elaborate, but soon the original printer's hack of an asterisk ⟨*⟩ over an inverted dagger ⟨⸸⟩ was settled on for typographic convenience.
