  1. (lexicography) Used in some dictionaries when a hyphenated word breaks on the hyphen at the end of a line.
    Synonym:
  2. (palaeography, Coptic) Conventionally used in modern texts to indicate a pre-pronominal form in Coptic grammar, as opposed to the simple hyphen for other uses.

Usage notes[edit]

In Fraktur script, the normal hyphen has the appearance of this glyph. However, it should be encoded as an ASCII hyphen and left to the font to render properly.
