From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *s-hjwəj-t. Cognate with Tibetan ཡི་དམ (yi dam), S'gaw Karen သွံၣ် (thweè), Western Pwo ၥွံၪ, Burmese သွေး (swe:), and Western Kayah ꤞꤝꤤ꤬ (thwì).
