Pronunciation

[edit]
  • -я́ние: IPA(key): [ˈʲænʲɪje]
  • -яние: IPA(key): [ʲɪnʲɪje]

Suffix

[edit]

-я́ние or -яние (-jánije or -janije)

  1. -tion, -ence, -ance, -ity, etc. (suffix used to form abstract nouns from verbs; added especially to verbs ending in -ять (-jatʹ); variant of -ание (-anije))
    та́ять (tájatʹ, to thaw) + ‎-яние (-janije) → ‎та́яние (tájanije, thawing)
возлия́ть (vozlijátʹ, to drink wine as a libation) + ‎-я́ние (-jánije) → ‎возлия́ние (vozlijánije, libation; drinking bout)
валя́ть (valjátʹ, to roll on a surface) + ‎-я́ние (-jánije) → ‎валя́ние (valjánije, rolling on a surface; fulling (cloth))

Usage notes

[edit]
  • This is a variant of -ание (-anije), used mostly with verbs in -ять (-jatʹ), and it has the same propeties (e.g. the stress is usually not drawn onto the suffix, unlike for -е́ние (-énije)).
