From Ancient Greek δάφνη Ἀλεξανδρεία (dáphnē Alexandreía), from δάφνη (dáphnē, laurel) + Ἀλεξανδρεία (Alexandreía, of Alexander, Alexandrian).

Alexandrian laurel (plural Alexandrian laurels)

  1. An ornamental shrub in the asparagus family, Danae racemosa, with glossy leaf-like stems
  2. An ornamental evergreen tree native from East Africa and India through the South Pacific of species Calophyllum inophyllum, which has strong wood and seeds containing a useful oil.
