Uncertain. Proposed etymologies include a derivation from Spanish oro (“gold”) and the third-person singular preterite form of haber (“to have”) ("there was gold"), a derivation from Kalinago oruba (“well-placed”) or a compound of two Kalinago words, ora (“shell”) and oubao (“island”).
