First described in 1873 by Felipe Poey y Aloy as the type species of the then-new monotypic genus Grammicolepis (< Ancient Greek γραμμικός (grammikós, grammatical) +‎ λεπίς (lepís, scale)). Epithet from Latin brāchium (limb) +‎ -culus (diminutive suffix).
