Etymology

[edit]

From Old Frisian leine (with restoration of the g due to influence from Old Frisian liāga (to lie); compare the g in West Frisian leagen), from Proto-West Germanic *luginu.

Alternatively, borrowed from Middle Low German lȫgene, from Old Saxon lugina, from the same Proto-West Germanic origin above.
