Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Indo-European *telh₂- (ground).[1] Compare with Latin tellus (earth) and Sanskrit तल (tala, bottom).

An exact formation cognate can be found in Ancient Greek τελαμών (telamṓn, strap), related on the notion of being objects that hold up another.
