From earlier *hnaskwuz, from Proto-Indo-European *knes- (to scrape; scratch; rub), from Proto-Indo-European *ken- (to scrape; scratch; rub). Cognate with Sanskrit किक्नस (kiknasa, crushed grain; meal; grits), Lithuanian knìsti (to dig up; tear apart).
