[edit]

Uncertain. Possibly a clipping of Schotteldook, compound of Schottel (bowl, platter) + Dook (cloth). Alternatively a clipping of Schorteldook (compare West Frisian skerteldoek, skeldoek), compound of Schortel (from Schort + -el (diminutive suffix), with the first element coming from Proto-West Germanic *skurtijā) + Dook.[1][2]

[edit]
  • IPA(key): /ˈʃɔ.lək/, [ʃɔɫk] (general)
  • IPA(key): /ˈʃo.lək/, [ʃoɫk] (traditional, now dated)
  • Rhymes: -ɔlək, -olək

Noun
