Etymology

In Newfoundland, derived from French Saint Antoine. The toponym was created in honor of the feast day of Saint Anthony the Great by explorer Jacques Cartier (1491 - 1557). The name originally referred to a location on the Québec coastline before migrating to Newfoundland.
