From Javanese ꦱꦸꦫꦧꦪ (surabaya), a compound word of ꦱꦸꦫ (sura, white shark) +‎ ꦧꦪ (baya, crocodile), from Old Javanese sura, asura (god, deity) +‎ bhaya (danger, calamity), from Sanskrit असुर (asura) +‎ भय (bhaya).
