I suppose you mean that acknowledgment should be downgraded to an {{alternative spelling of}}. I'd suggest it should go the other way: acknowledgement should be an alternative spelling of acknowledgment. Google Books Ngrams shows that the short version is more common in English as a whole, and in American English, and was more common in British English until the 1960s. —Aɴɢʀ (talk) 18:50, 25 March 2017 (UTC)

I think current usage should be more important in determining where to place the full entry. If acknowledgement is now the most-used form, then that's where it should go. —CodeCat 18:54, 25 March 2017 (UTC)

I just checked the NOW corpus and there acknowledgement is more common (roughly 2:1), from 2010-now. – Jberkel (talk) 20:37, 25 March 2017 (UTC)

Over English as a whole, the short version is currently used more than the long version; the long version is currently used more only in British English, according to bgc ngrams. The NOW corpus disagrees, but seems to collect its data in a rather idiosyncratic way. Its results show acknowledgement collocating very frequently with material, but apparently only because "Sri Express" writes a disclaimer on a large number of pages saying, "If you feel any of your copyrighted material is seen without acknowledgement, email us at...". That doesn't seem to really count as multiple instances of that spelling to me. —Aɴɢʀ (talk) 21:40, 25 March 2017 (UTC)

I agree with CodeCat and Angr that the currently more common of two alternative forms should be the lemma; in this case, that's acknowledgment. Do British authorities prescribe the e spelling, though? If so, it's a {{standard spelling of|from=British spelling}} more than a {{alternative spelling of}}, and the tendency with regard to two standard forms has been to lemmatize the older entry — which in this case is still acknowledgment. - -sche (discuss) 22:31, 25 March 2017 (UTC)

• Oxford lists acknowledgement first, saying acknowledgment is an American spelling, but I tend to use acknowledgment. Maybe because my surname (of English origin) has "dgk" in the middle. DonnanZ (talk) 11:28, 27 March 2017 (UTC)
