Talk:empathetic

"Empathetic" is often used not in the dictionary sense of "showing" empathy, but rather in the sense of "evoking" empathy--particularly in the phrase "an empathetic character" of a narrative work. Any thoughts on the correctness of this usage? Does it somehow reduce to the official meaning, or is it an unwarranted inversion of the official meaning?
