The "L" symbol predates the 1990s and was first used by friends Michael MacDonald from Detroit and James Brian Walsh from Allen Park Michigan in 1988. The "L" symbol began as a joke between themselves, when they would threaten each other with placing the word loser on the forehead of the guy who passed out first after bar hopping. The "L" to the forehead became the symbol of being a drunk loser, but was soon adapted to all forms of stupid behavior.
