Sanskrit nouns

[edit]

Hi there. Please format your entries properly, or someone will probably delete them. See अपस्मार (apasmāra) for a typical Sanskrit noun. SemperBlotto 10:24, 21 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Sanskrit

[edit]

Hi, please note that we do not include translation sections in non-English entries. Also, note these changes Please create your entries like that. And when you do add translations to English entries use the assisted system (the entry box that appears in translation tables). One other thing, don't bother adding Interwiki links, I'm pretty sure we still have a bot for that. If however you still feel obliged to add them remember two things: First, interwikis should link to the exact same entry; (deprecated template usage) Unity is not the same as (deprecated template usage) unity. Second, there isn't much point in adding an interwiki when the target wiktionary has no entry yet. 50 Xylophone Players talk 04:08, 18 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

thank you

[edit]

i am giving interwikis because it is not coming automatically. i am really shocked with the systamatical presentation you are doing. really great. i will try to copy it later. thank you --Dvellakat (talk) 04:22, 18 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

A belated welcome

[edit]

With all the fuss about various issues, I see you haven't been properly welcomed. Here's our standard welcome message for new editors, which should give you a better idea about the requirements for editing here:

Welcome

[edit]

Hello, welcome to Wiktionary, and thank you for your contributions so far.

If you are unfamiliar with wiki-editing, take a look at Help:How to edit a page. It is a concise list of technical guidelines to the wiki format we use here: how to, for example, make text boldfaced or create hyperlinks. Feel free to practice in the sandbox. If you would like a slower introduction we have a short tutorial.

These links may help you familiarize yourself with Wiktionary:

  • Entry layout (EL) is a detailed policy on Wiktionary's page formatting; all entries must conform to it. The easiest way to start off is to copy the contents of an existing same-language entry, and then adapt it to fit the entry you are creating.
  • Check out Language considerations to find out more about how to edit for a particular language.
  • Our Criteria for Inclusion (CFI) defines exactly which words can be added to Wiktionary; the most important part is that Wiktionary only accepts words that have been in somewhat widespread use over the course of at least a year, and citations that demonstrate usage can be asked for when there is doubt.
  • If you already have some experience with editing our sister project Wikipedia, then you may find our guide for Wikipedia users useful.
  • If you have any questions, bring them to Wiktionary:Information desk or ask me on my talk page.
  • Whenever commenting on any discussion page, please sign your posts with four tildes (~~~~) which automatically produces your username and timestamp.
  • You are encouraged to add a BabelBox to your userpage to indicate your self-assessed knowledge of languages.

Enjoy your stay at Wiktionary! Chuck Entz (talk) 14:13, 18 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

निन्द् (nind)

[edit]

Please stop adding translations to Sanskrit entries; this is the English Wiktionary, we only include translations in our English entries. Also, can you add the Latin transliteration to this entry if possible? 50 Xylophone Players talk 14:52, 19 June 2012 (UTC) P.S. You can simply edit this section of your talk page rather than add a new topic to reply to me.Reply

sorry. i will do like that. another question is how i can add a word in translation. i can see only the preview. now i added malayalam and hindi by editing it. is it the right way? --Dvellakat (talk) 14:59, 19 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
If you are asking about the assisted system, then when the preview comes up, you click the save button in the top left corner of the screen. You can also add multiple translations like this before saving. 50 Xylophone Players talk 15:04, 19 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
You can add the Hindi and Malayāḷam verbs in the section Descendants, if they are descendants of the Sanskrit verb. The uſer hight Bogorm converſation 12:20, 19 February 2014 (UTC)Reply

Categories

[edit]

You're making a mess of these. I've set up {{sa-noun}} to categorize by gender. For topical categories, the syntax is Category:sa:Animals (if the topic is animals), not the spelling category not catagory, and the sa for Sanskrit. Thank you, Mglovesfun (talk) 16:23, 22 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

sanskrit nouns

[edit]

sanskrit nouns are categoried according to its end (eg ending in a, i u e o, r etc) and the declensions are according to its ending. that is why i made a catagory like that. i hope you understood--Dvellakat (talk) 16:28, 22 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

You have it backward: the endings come from the declensions. Otherwise you would have to have separate categories for nouns followed by words with vowels, since those aren't spelled with with a visarga. Endings are a convenient way to refer to declensions, but this can be confusing in cases where nouns from other declensions happen to have the same ending in the nominative singular form.
While it's true that you, as a speaker of Sanskrit, have insights that others don't, it's also true that you can take many details for granted: as Marshall McLuhan once wrote, "I don't know who discovered water, but it certainly wasn't a fish]] Chuck Entz (talk)

Moving to visarga form

[edit]

Please stop moving pages with Sanskrit nouns to the visarga form, especially those with entries in other languages. See Wiktionary talk:About Sanskrit#Visarga (ः)

Also, the hidden interwiki links like [[fr:शब्द]] are for linking to actual articles in other wiktionaries, so changing them when you move a page to a different spelling just links to a bunch of "we don't have this" messages. There are bots that add these, so it would be better to just delete them.

In this case, though, the fact that there are so many interwikis for the stem form and so few (if any) for the visarga form adds weight to the assertion that your practice of making visarga forms the lemma is contrary to accepted practice just about everywhere. Chuck Entz (talk) 20:02, 22 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Despite the above request, you continue to move pages to visarga forms, or to forms in -म in the case of neuters (which isn't even correct, it would have to be -म्). But the point is that Wiktionary, like Monier Williams and all other Sanskrit dictionaries, uses the stem of nouns as the lemma form, not the nominative. Please stop trying to change that without getting consensus first. —Angr 16:07, 10 October 2012 (UTC)Reply

Interwikis

[edit]

The fact that human being sometimes make errors whilst typing interwikis whilst bots do not, also the fact that the number of pages needing interwikis here (never mind over all Wiktionaries) is in the thousands, for me these are two compelling reasons to only have bots adding interwikis. Seems your two most recent interwikis both contained errors. Mglovesfun (talk) 09:37, 15 October 2012 (UTC) i gave inter wikies manually because it is not automatically comes when a page is opened in the same name. it may be on the cause of small difference of a space or coma. so the easiest way is first give link and then open an inter wiki using the link. --Dvellakat (talk) 10:47, 15 October 2012 (UTC)Reply

Formatting

[edit]

Please read your welcome notes, or look at the formatting of existing words. All your entries need to be fixed by other people who have better things to do with their time. SemperBlotto (talk) 11:08, 15 October 2012 (UTC) i am still working on it. dont be so speedy to edit a page.it is true that i can check the preview. but as i can modify it even after saving sometimes i saves a page even before my sastisfaction. but i will complete it.--Dvellakat (talk) 11:14, 15 October 2012 (UTC)Reply

सुदिनम् ! I see you are creating entries on Sanskrit verbs. In the cathegory Category:Sanskrit_verbs most entries are given in their third-person singular present forms and whilst it has not yet been incorporated into the policy on Sanskrit entries, with regard to the prevalence of these entries it might be commendable to make consistent any future entries with this approach. Accordingly I have changed the antonym of निन्दति from वन्द to वन्दते. With best regards, The uſer hight Bogorm converſation 12:20, 19 February 2014 (UTC)Reply
P. S. I have given you a suggestion about mentioning Malayāḷam and Hindi entries in this section (q.v.). The uſer hight Bogorm converſation 12:20, 19 February 2014 (UTC)Reply
