From Proto-Balto-Slavic (compare Latvian asara), from Proto-Indo-European *h₂éḱru, perhaps from a compound *dr̥ḱ-h₂eḱru- (literally eye bitter) (compare *dáḱru-). Cognate with Ancient Greek δάκρυ (dákru), Sanskrit अश्रु (aśru), English tear.
