From Middle High German antwürten, from Old High German antwurten, from Proto-Germanic *andawurdijaną. Cognate with German antworten, Dutch antwoorden, Gothic 𐌰𐌽𐌳𐍅𐌰𐌿𐍂𐌳𐌾𐌰𐌽 (andwaurdjan).
