a- +‎ semeyar, or possibly from a Vulgar Latin *assimiliāre, from Late Latin assimilāre, present active infinitive of assimilō, from Latin ad + similō < similis. Compare Spanish asemejar, Portuguese assemelhar, Italian assomigliare.
