Via Ancient Greek βαλαύστιον (balaústion) from Semitic, related to Imperial Aramaic 𐡁𐡀𐡋𐡀𐡈 (bʾlʾṭ, pomegranate shoot), Classical Syriac ܒܠܳܨܳܐ (blāṣā, pomegranate shoot).
