Borrowed from Old Church Slavonic калити (kaliti, to harden), from Proto-Slavic *kaliti. Compare Serbo-Croatian kaliti.

  1. to temper, harden, toughen, anneal
  2. (reflexive) to steel, harden, or brace oneself
  3. to stew in fat
