Inherited from Latin capisterium, probably through a Vulgar Latin *capisteria. The Latin further derives from Ancient Greek σκαφιστήριον (skaphistḗrion). Compare Tuscan Italian capistejo, capisteo, Abruzzese Neapolitan capistiera.
