Unknown, probably from Sanskrit छात्त्र (chāttra, scholar; pupil), छत्त्र (chattra, teacher, literally shelter; parasol, umbrella). Sound change probably were influenced by Pali chatta (parasol), Prakrit chatta (parasol).
