Etymology[edit]

From Middle Welsh kymhwys, or from Proto-Brythonic *kumpuɨs, from Latin compēnsus. By surface analysis, cym- +‎ pwys (weight, importance). Cognate with Cornish kompes (even, balanced, plain, accurate).
