Etymology[edit]

Sino-Vietnamese word from 氧氣, composed of (oxygen) and (gas). The Chinese character (dưỡng) is composed of (khí, chemical radical for "gassy" elements) + (dưỡng, to nurture), due to the life-sustaining attribute of oxygen.
